Liposuction is designed to remove excess fat from areas of the body that are diet and exercise resistant. It is not a weight loss procedure. Every individual’s fat distribution and body shape are genetically determined. Thus, despite exercise and diet, many of us have localized fat deposits that remain despite our best efforts. Liposculpturing or liposuction, utilizes small incisions through which small hollow cannulas(tubes) are inserted into these localized fat deposit areas and the fat is removed by vacuum suctioning. Technological advances over the last ten to twelve years include tumescent technique and ultrasonic assisted liposuction. Procedure times vary significantly depending on the number of areas to be treated and the volume of fat to be removed ranging anywhere from one to four hours.
With tumescent technique a mixture including saline solution, lidocaine, epinephrine as well as other ingredients is instilled in the fatty tissues prior to suctioning. This achieves two important goals. First the epinephrine constricts the blood vessels in the region such that blood loss in minimized. Secondly, this tumescent solution creates tissue turger or firmness so that multiple passes with small cannulas can be achieved. By creating this "Swiss cheese" like effect through the fatty layer the overlying skin is able to shrink more evenly creating the opportunity to achieve smoother results.
Ultrasonic liposuction incorporates an ultrasonic probe placed into the fatty tissues to dissolve fatty deposits with ultrasonic energy prior to removal by suctioning. This is advantageous mostly in areas of fat that contain more fibrous tissue such as the flanks, mid and upper back regions.
Recovery from liposculpture is relatively quick and easy. Barring any complications, Louisiana cosmetic surgery patients are instructed to recommence low impact exercises such as elliptical trainer or cycling within five days. For the first three to four days after liposuction, the patient will experience soreness similar to a day after a hard muscular workout before one is in shape. With the new techniques available, bruising is minimal. A compression garment is worn for four to five weeks post surgery. This is to allow the excess skin to be supported while shrinkage occurs. Final results are typically seen after three to four months.
